IND Winter Weather Procedures

  • Deicing Forecasts
We will be required to issue a deicing forecast for IND when the forecast calls for 4 hours duration of a B or C event (not including Rime Ice on descent), and/or one hour of a D or E event for the next 30 hours. Issue the forecast if the probability of occurrence is 30% or greater. We will be required to activate the text page option every time a deicing forecast is issued for IND.

If the above conditions are NOT forecast to continue, the meteorologist on duty is required to remove the previous forecast from the SPT page. This is done by using the trash can symbol instead of the pencil (for editing). This will prevent a forecast no longer consistent with the current forecast to remain available for viewing.

If winter weather conditions are forecast to occur at IND that DO NOT meet the above criteria, the meteorologist on duty is required to verbally notify the SOC director and SPT personnel.

  •
  • Winter Weather Advisory Depictions
No change to the triggers for WWA Depictions. However, be sure to include IND as spoke stations when a WWA is issued for MSP/DTW /MEM/East Coast if applicable. No need to fax WWA Depictions to IND as they will view them via SPT website.

  •
  • TelCons
IND will continue to be included in TelCons for MSP/DTW/MEM/East Coast when applicable. If weather is localized to IND, the criteria for a planning TelCon for IND based on weather is 4 hours of a D or E event. However, other issues may drive the need for a TelCon. The SOC Director may decide to call a TelCon for weather conditions less than 4 hours of a D/E event.

  •
  • SOC Morning Briefing
We are required to include IND as hubs on the 8am SOC morning briefing.

  •
  • Other
A reminder will be added to the schedule minder to review and evaluate IND weather/forecast each shift. Also, we will include IND weather on the recorded message done 3 times daily.
(Note: This procedure was modified on 3-11-06 to exclude MKE due to reduced operations at that airport)
